WKD shares ‘vile’ Easter cocktail

The alcopop staple of regrettable student nights out posted a cocktail recipe to Facebook and Instagram designed to showcase the finest of seasonal ingredients, the Cadbury Creme Egg.

For those who don’t think the luminous blue booze is insufficiently sweet, their Easter wish has been answered. The recipe involves 275ml of 4% ABV WKD Blue being fortified with vanilla-flavoured vodka and topped up with cream soda. This is then garnished with a topped and impaled Creme Egg and an optional addition of melted chocolate on the rim for that je ne sais quoi.

The stunt from WKD, produced by Beverage Brands, received the desired attention on social media. Commenters on Instagram and Facebook were fairly unanimous in their verdict:

“This looks vile, oh my lord.”

“How to ruin a perfectly good drink.”

“Had me right up until the chocolate.”

The sentiment of the commenters was put most succinctly as follows:

“WTF is that?”

However, not every user engaged with the provocative post was deterred by the brown and blue beverage:

“My favourite drink still and I’m 37 years old.”

Those made to feel young at heart by a brightly coloured, sugary drink may not remain so. db calculates using nutracheck that one glass of the concoction clocks in around the region of 470 calories, approximately twice that of an Espresso Martini (largely due to the copious amounts of chocolate). Calories on menus are certainly a hotly contested topic, and fears of the introduction of calorie-counts to cocktail list may deter chain restaurants from putting on the WKD Easter special next year.

Perhaps it’s best to just keep this unholy creation as an annual, post-Lent treat.
