Kirkstall Brewery opens taproom in Leeds
Leeds-based Kirkstall Brewery is set to open The City Taproom on Sovereign Street near Leeds station tomorrow. The site, which is being launched in partnership with local street food business Little Bao Boy, will include a line-up of 16 taps. db finds out more.

People visiting the City taproom will find Kirkstall Brewery classics, including favourites such as Kirkstall Pilsner, Virtuous and Judicious alongside permanent lines of Veltins, the newly-returned Double Diamond, and Guinness.
The taproom will also feature two new cask lines: one serving Three Swords as a staple, and the other on rotation starting this month with Golden Hour.
Beer fans can also look forward to a rotating selection from UK breweries such as Five Points, Boundary, Vault City and Harvey’s. Additionally, the fridges will be fully stocked with Kirkstall and guests’ cans will also be available to be enjoyed on site or to be taken away.
Taprooms take off
Despite growing consumer demand for independent beer, gaining space in pubs remains restricted and db recently highlighted how breweries had started selling more beer directly to drinkers via taprooms to adapt to global brewers’ market domination.
Partner Content
The food offer for the venue will continue to be operated by Little Bao Boy and yet the team will have a bigger kitchen twice its former size in an effort to increase capacity and deliver faster service. There are also anticipated to be more collaborations, menu specials and much more to follow to support the partnership at the site.
A ‘re-imagination’
Describing the new venture, Kirkstall Brewery founder Steve Holt explained to db that: “it has been named The City Taproom after a famous but long-gone Leeds pub known as The City, which was situated where the statue of the Dortmund Brewer now stands. Images of the original City pub are a feature in the new look City Taproom, which can best be described as a ‘re-imagination’ of a traditional city-centre pub”.
Holt added: “The City Taproom celebrates Leeds and its rich pub and brewing heritage. We hope that it will become a popular addition to the amazing and diverse venues that make Leeds such a vibrant City for hospitality and entertainment.”
Renovations
The City Taproom is Kirkstall Brewery’s latest site following its renovation of its local pub The Victoria & Commercial in partnership with the team at Whitelocks, as well as its recently renewed stewardship of the city’s iconic Tetley brewery building.
The City Taproom by Kirkstall Brewery and Little Bao Boy will open seven days a week, opening its doors at midday on 23 April.
