Yalumba celebrates 175th anniversary with ASC Fine Wines
Barossa Valley winery Yalumba has marked its 175th anniversary, releasing a limited selection of great vintages aged for up to 20 years.
Samuel Smith established Yalumba, Australia’s oldest family-owned winery, in 1849. Now celebrating its 175th anniversary, the company is in the hands of fifth-generation proprietor Robert Hill-Smith.
Hill-Smith described Yalumba’s 175th anniversary as “a genuinely momentous milestone”.
“This anniversary is not only a nod to years passed. It is a reflection of our resilience and a commitment to mastering our craft, generation after generation. It also acknowledges the many exceptional fine wine people that have come through the gates of Yalumba across three centuries, with shared love for our property, our wines, and our industry,” he said.
“Most of all, it is celebration of an exciting future ahead for our family business and the world of Australian fine wine. While we celebrate our past 175 years, we keep our eyes firmly set on the next 175 as the generations before us have done.”
The Australian wine producer chose to mark the occasion in China alongside ASC Fine Wines, its exclusive importer and distributor in the country.
In the winery’s 175th year, Yalumba will debut a Museum Collection featuring a limited selection of the great vintages of its finest wines, aged up to 20 years.
ASC will bring The Menzies Cabernet Sauvignon and The Signature Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz to China.
At the celebration dinner in Shanghai, The Signature Cabernet Sauvignon 2012 was served as the highlight of the evening.
The event, held at the Canton Restaurant, Grand Hyatt Shanghai, brought together ASC’s customers and media partners as part of Yalumba’s global celebrations throughout the year. Members of the Yalumba team including Louisa Rose, winemaker and head of sustainability; Craig Hadden, general manager sales for Asia Pacific; Carolyn Macleod, marketing manager – premium; and Berry Zhao, china sales manager attended the event.
Makoto Nagae, CEO of ASC Fine Wines said of the ongoing partnership between the two companies: “Our partnership with Yalumba has been a cornerstone of our success in bringing exceptional Australian wines to China. We are immensely proud to celebrate with this milestone of 175th anniversary of Yalumba, a winery that shares our values of innovation and excellence, with our esteemed customers and media partners in China.”
Yalumba chose to celebrate in China following the lifting of tariffs on Australian wine in the market. Since March 2024 Australian producers have worked hard to re-integrate into China, previously one of Australian wine’s biggest global markets.
Nagae added: “With the recent lifting of the Australian wine tariff, we are confident that this partnership will continue to flourish, offering wine lovers in China access to some of the best quality and classic wines Australia has to offer. The future is bright, and we look forward to many more years of shared success.”
