Amateurs prepare for Grand National

The John Smith’s People’s Race will be held before the main event at the Grand National at Aintree this weekend. Ten novice riders have been chosen to compete for £100,000 for charity, from an initial 3,500 competition entries. The chosen few have since been undergoing an intensive training programme to prepare them for Saturday’s nine-furlong race.

John Smith’s, owned by Scottish & Newcastle, is extensively involved in racing sponsorship, with involvement in 90 races over 30 UK courses. The ale’s title sponsorship of the Grand National began in 2005, and has been extended until 2010. The brewer’s link with racing began in 1959, with the commercial sponsorship of a racecourse in York, and one that still remains in the form of the John Smith’s Cup.
