Lidl rolls out Oktoberfest beers from 59p
Lidl is rolling out its Oktoberfest promotion this week, with Bavarian beers selling for as little as 59p.
The German discounter is tapping into the growing popularity of the Munich beer festival, which traces its roots back to the early 19th century, by stocking four beers from Bavaria.
The range includes a shandy-style Naturtrübes Radler (RRP: 59p), a Festbier (RRP: 99p), a wheat beer (RRP: 99p) and a limited edition 950ml Festbier and Stein glass (RRP: £4.49), as well as a Zünftler Black Forest Cherry Schnapps (40% ABV).
Other retailers getting in on the popular event include Waitrose, who said its German beer had risen 32% in the last year. This week the upmarket retailer rolled out a selection of 5L mini-kegs, and five new limited edition beers – although only three came from German breweries, the others coming from AB-InBev-owned Chicago brewery Goose Island, and Camden Town Brewery.
Retailers have been ramping up their craft beer presence in recent months, with both Waitrose and Tesco boosting the range by 30% earlier this year, and Asda adding around 100 new craft beers as part of a major refresh to build “the most credible beer range in the multiples”. The Co-op, Asda, Majestic and Oddbins have also dialled up their focus on craft beers over the last year.
