Liv-ex to launch ‘Amazon Prime’ style logistics solution

Liv-ex is to launch a new “all you can eat” logistics package for clients in Europe to make logistics simpler and more affordable.

The “Amazon Prime” solution aims to improve speed of delivery and the cost of the logistics services across Europe, Liv-ex’s CEO James Miles said. Consumers in certain EU countries can choose to pay a fixed logistics fee in return for Liv-ex collecting an unlimited quantity of wine from the customer, rather than having a pay a pay as you go, per case charge.

This would remove the uncertainty around logistics and help customers grow their business and trade more, he said.

Speaking at last week’s db conference, Miles said that logistics in fine wine were “unbelievably complicated and expensive” and although they were “far and away” the organisation’s biggest cost, it also made up a huge part of Liv-ex service to its customer. There was also “a real problem” of how Liv-ex can pick up small quantities of fine wine since Brexit.

“Luckily, we’ve got scale where we can run trucks all over Europe and pick up small quantities of wine from multiple different transactions in a cost effective way, and pass those savings on to our customers so that they can continue that trade and continue to operate cross borders,” he said. “That logistics piece of Liv-ex and making all of that work is absolutely a fundamental part of our capability and our offering to customers.”

Liv-ex has been trialling the system in France, Switzerland, Germany, Austria and Italy for a year and it has proven to be very successful and very effective, he said. “People are doing a lot more trade and making a much bigger return from their investment on Liv-ex as a result of doing that. And so we launched it as a as a general product tool to all of our customers in those markets.”
