Thai hotel mixes the world’s largest Negroni
By Louis ThomasA hotel in Thailand has achieved the Guinness World Record for its supersized version of an aperitivo hour classic.

The 630 litre combination of Cinzano 1757 Rosso Vermouth, Campari and Bulldog London Dry Gin (in equal measures) was assembled by mixologists at the Kimpton Maa-Lai Bangkok Hotel on Monday to mark the beginning of Negroni Week.
Though we might normally associate the iconic ruby red cocktail with elegance and sophistication, the creation of this particular one was more reminiscent of an aeroplane being refuelled or some bizarre science experiment as the cocktail mixture was pumped from barrels into a 1.7 metre tall, 1.4m wide, acryclic container encased in ice that weighed approximately 400 kilograms before the booze was added. Patrick Both, the hotel manager, then poured in the final bottles into the container, and an adjudicator from Guinness World Records handed over the coveted framed certificate.
It was then moved from the bar to be displayed in its outdoor ‘Urban Oasis’ garden – though precisely how a drink which, with its container included, weighs around a tonne was shifted is unclear. One of the conditions of the record, according to adjudicator Kazuyoshi Kirimura, is that the 630 litres of booze must be bottled and distributed over the coming months.

The colossal cocktail comes hot on the heels of another contender, mixed in May of this year by Rock Salt Bar in Bristol. That particular drink clocked in at a still awe-inspiring 600 litres, but falls 30 litres (that’s roughly 300 regular-sized Negronis) shy of the new champion. However, the previous recognised Guinness World Record holder was a measly 504 litres.
In other big drink news (in the most literal sense), in May the world’s largest bottle of Scotch sold at auction for £1.1 million.
