London wine bar raising funds for Ukraine ambulance

Forza Wine has been raising funds for an ambulance to provide medical support in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

The raffle winner, who will be given an all-expenses paid evening at the venue for them and seven of their friends, is due to be announced today (Friday 6 May). The prize included two full menus of food, three litres of natural wine and 32 cocktails – that’s four each – at the rooftop venue in Peckham.

The fundraiser which the raffle is in support of has, at the time of writing, raised just over a third of its GBP£10,000 target. But, there are still two weeks left to donate on the Crowdfunder page. The hope is that the ambulance will be purchased in Poland and driven across the border and across Ukraine to Dnipro in the east. Much of the infrastructure in Dnipro has been destroyed by Russian missile strikes, and many civilian casualties have been inflicted.

The bar, which commands views over the city, boasts an extensive natural wine list with several vintages being sold by the litre. It has taken up the Ukrainian cause in recent months, with an Instagram post from a week after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine stating that “we can’t change the ways of a psychotic dictator, but we can hopefully use our restaurant to raise money to help the situation.”

In March of this year, Forza Wine announced on Instagram that a similar raffle, with the prize being a meal for four with a litre of wine, had sold 1,582 tickets and raised GBP£7,910 for UNICEF-provided humanitarian aid in Ukraine.

The wine world has rallied around Ukraine. iDealwine’s charity auction for Ukraine Amitié took place last month, while Wine Unites for Ukraine called for donations of bottles to raise funds for humanitarian causes.
