€1.5 million private wine collection to go under the hammer

From March 22 to 24, iDealwine will be auctioning off 9,000 bottles from a private collection, including First Growth Bordeaux and rare natural wines.

Although the lowest starting bid in the auction is €15, there are a great number of rare and acclaimed wines to be bid upon, with a single bottle of Echezaux Grand Cru Bizot (Domaine) 2013 starting at €3,000. The unnamed consignor said that he was “lucky to be able to buy alot of fine wine before prices went through the roof”. Much of the collection was amassed either from visits to wine merchants in Paris, or directly from the producers.

iDealwine CEO Cyrille Jomand declared that the collection “has the best (not necessarily the most expensive) producers from every French wine region; and a focus on the estates that are highly-sought after by wine lovers, rather than the most famous labels.”

In addition to big-name Burgundies, such as Arnaud Ente and René Engel, there are also bottles from the likes of Pétrus and Château Mouton Rothschild. Although the collection is largely French, offerings from Italy, including Gaja, and elsewhere in the world also feature.

Notably, the collection also contains rare natural wines. The consignor began collecting these low-intervention offerings a decade ago with the purchase of bottles from Richard Leroy. It was in 2011 that Leroy, now a celebrated figure of natural winemaking in the Loire, cut sulphur out of the process altogether at Les Noëls de Montbenault. Natural winemaking in the Jura is also strongly represented.

iDealwine has become the leader in major online wine auctions, being named the top auctioneer in France for the sixth year running last Summer. In 2020, iDealwine held 41 auctions, with 175,000 bottles selling for €23.4 million. With the entire collection valued at approximately €1.5 million (£1.25 million), the catalogue is certain to excite and intrigue wine enthusiasts. Jomand describes this latest blockbuster auction as capturing “the very essence of iDealwine”.
