Sotheby’s Hong Kong announces autumn wine sale line-up

Sotheby’s Wine will present five wine auctions in Hong Kong this October with over 1,300 lots. Highlights include Asia’s second-highest estimated single-owner wine sale, a set of six vintage single malts spanning the years 1951 to 2000, and the world’s oldest single malt.

The auction house’s Hong Kong Autumn 2021 sale series will be held from 7 to 9 October. The five wine and spirit sales are: “Glenlivet Gordon & MacPhail Generations 80 Year Old 1940” , “The Marvellous Leroy Collection”, “Finest & Rarest Wines + Library Vintages Direct from Seña and Chadwick”, “The Dalmore Decades: 1951 – 2000” and headliner “The Art of Living: Legendary Wines from the Cellar of Pierre Chen”.

Featuring more than 1,300 lots, the five sales carry a combined pre-sale estimate of HK$135 million.

A rare spirits sale will kick start the series on 7 Oct, with the spotlight cast on an 80-Year-Old Single Malt Scotch from Glenlivet Distillery that has been bottled by Gordon & MacPhail. It is the world’s oldest single malt by date.

This whisky, distilled in 1940, has finally been bottled through a collaboration with internationally acclaimed architect and designer, Sir David Adjaye OBE.

Adjaye designed a unique decanter and oak case around the theme “Artistry in Oak” – a fitting tribute to this landmark moment for the industry – in which to house this inimitable spirit.

A variety of fine and rare whisky collections will also be presented alongside in this sale.

On the same day, the event will be followed by “Finest and Rarest Wines + Library Vintages Direct from Seña and Chadwick”. Highlights include Château Palmer from Sotheby’s Direct from the Château sale, and various Domaine de la Romanée-Conti wines.

Besides French wine, other offerings are for example Italian icons Masseto and Sassicaia, Spanish legend Vega Sicilia Unico and American icon Screaming Eagle.

The Dalmore Distillery will present the only ‘full decades’ collection spanning from 1951 to 2000 – it includes all six bottles that will be available for sale on 8 October. The Decades No. 6 Collection encapsulates 60 years of whisky making at the distillery, a true masterpiece of time. This partnership between Sotheby’s and The Dalmore is the only chance to purchase the full six bottle set, including the coveted 1951 vintage.

“The Marvellous Leroy Collection” is one of the most comprehensive Leroy collections Sotheby’s has offered, comprising of 313 lots and estimated at HKD21 million.

The Leroy offering is amassed from more than three decades of collecting through reputable European and Hong Kong wine merchants and auction houses. The wine collector, an avid wine lover, is one of the earliest advocates of Madam Lalou Bize Leroy in Asia. The sale offers a great range of wines from Domaine Leroy, Maison Leroy, and Domaine d’Auvenay. Highlights include 131 lots of Domaine Leroy, of which 43 lots are from the famed Musigny, 24 lots from Domaine d’Auvenay including the first vintage 1989 Puligny Montrachet Folatières, and Musigny from Roumier and Mugnier.

Last but not least, the series will be wrapped up by the cellar collection of Pierre Chen, one of the world’s most prominent art collectors who is also a passionate and equally dedicated collector of wine on 9 October. For details, please refer to our previous report.
