Marston’s-owned brewery turns disused warehouse into giant advent calendar

A UK brewery has taken inspiration from the likes of Banksy by transforming a disused warehouse into a giant advent calendar.

Banks’s Brewery has transformed a boarded-up building on a dual carriageway in Wolverhampton into a giant, 11-metre-tall advent calendar.

Each of the 25 windows on the old Brewbaker’s building in Willenhall Road reveals a  Christmas-themed graffiti design complete with tongue-in-cheek messages to ring in the festive season.

It has been created by Martin Gillan at Big Al’s Creative Emporium.

The stunt is part of Banks’s ongoing ‘Tells It Like It Is’ campaign, which sees the Marston-owned brewery attempting to engage a younger audience with a marketing strategy more closely aligned with the craft beer sector.

The advent calendar stunt is in a similar vein to stunts pulled by craft beer giant BrewDog in recent months.

This year, BrewDog launched a number of high-profile irreverent stunts including the release of a beer protesting the US governments inaction on climate change.

Marstons has turned its attention towards its portfolio of regional breweries this year, after it announced that local beers and craft drinks contributed to a 1.6% rise in sales at the company’s pubs this year.

Gaynor Green, from Banks’s said: “While Banks’s remains proud of its rich heritage, our focus has been to give the brand a new lease of life by appealing to a fresh audience. Throughout the past year, the ‘Tells It Like It Is’ campaign has gone from strength to strength in capturing the brand’s modern and ambitious stance speaking in the relatable language of the pub-goer.”
