Winery creates ‘first chromed-glass wine bottle’ for petrol heads

Tank Garage Winery located in Calistoga, California has created what it claims is “the first chromed-glass wine bottle in history” with its design evoking a vintage American car.

The winery, a former 1930s petrol station, has drawn on its past life to release a limited edition, chromed-glass bottle with a “luxurious mirrored surface” and an embossed winged-wheel emblem, replicating “the iconic curves and textures of classic Americana metalwork”. The bottles are fitted with resin seals imported from Italy.

Chrome Dreams 2015 is due to go on sale on 15 September and is a blend of 87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petite Sirah produced in the Napa Valley. Tank Garage will produce 500 cases and each bottle will go on sale for US$75.

Inspired by America’s love affair with the motorcar, the wine description reads: “We went back to a time when cars weren’t just cars, but artful vessels of freedom, carrying the American dream westward across Route 66. A time when we were disconnected, living pump-to-pump, windows down, roaring up the Pacific Coast Highway. Between the 1930s and 1950s, the American automobile was symbolic, a direct reflection of our greatest hopes and dreams. From the austere contours of streamline moderne to the brazen fins of post-war Motorama, these mechanical sculptures spoke to who we aspired to be”.

The winery’s other offerings include Like You Stole It 2015 (a blend of Mourvèdre, Grenache and Carignan, featuring a 1969 Dodge Charger on the label), California Stroke Skin-Fermented White 2016 (an orange wine made from a blend of 92% Vermentino and 8% Verdelho), and The Heavy Cabernet Sauvignon 2014 (featuring a portrait of John L. Sullivan, the last Heavyweight Champion of bare-knuckle boxing, on the label.)
