Flight passenger claims one ‘simple’ gesture led to Champagne service

A passenger has claimed one small gesture towards the cabin crew assisted in a string of unexpected perks, such as Champagne, being offered during a flight.

A passenger has claimed one small gesture towards the cabin crew assisting in a string of unexpected perks, such as Champagne, being offered during a flight.

In a video by Henry Wade, who posts as @henryjwade on TikTok, in-flight rewards received after making the gesture included being given extra space, free Champagne and first-class snacks.

According to Wade, the idea is “definitely worth a shot” and he suggested that before passengers reach the aircraft they should think about stopping at an airport shop to pick up a few inexpensive snacks for the cabin crew.

Wade told viewers to his channel that if you “start by picking up some snacks or a small gift” they are “just a little something to make a big impact” and explained that he simply buys items like M&Ms, chocolate fingers and Skittles.

Wade noted that, rather than rushing to board the flight, it was recommended to try waiting until the end of the queue to give a better opportunity to have a proper conversation with the cabin crew.

Deploying the gesture

“Make sure you board last,” he suggested and added that then, upon reaching the aircraft door, “just be super nice to them. Show them charisma, show them some charm, show them a bit of banter”. Then, before handing over the treats, he revealed that he told the crew: “I know how much you guys work” and added: “Enjoy some snacks for your flight.”

Wade revealed that he had barely started walking towards his seat before he felt a tap on his shoulder and a flight attendant then greeted him with a smile before opening an iPad and explaining the different options available. Wade said that the crew then offered him a series of unexpected perks and “gave me an entire row to myself, threw in some first-class snacks and even bought me Champagne”.

He also said that his meal was served before other passengers and that free treats continued throughout the flight and added that the experience was enough to convince him the gesture was worthwhile in remembering. He explained: “Honestly it’s a confidence booster for anyone to try. It’s definitely worth a shot.”

A positive impression

Remarking on Wade’s experience, a spokesperson for travel experts Lapland Famille offered its perspective on the gesture and pointed out that while “there’s no harm in trying a small, polite gesture like this…the outcome ultimately depends on the crew, the flight and what’s available on the day. Cabin crew cannot promise upgrades, and complimentary extras are always discretionary. While kindness and good manners can sometimes leave a positive impression, travellers looking for a more reliable route to an upgrade should consider joining airline loyalty programmes, collecting points and making use of upgrade vouchers whenever possible”.

Wade’s experience however may prove to be useful for many holidaymakers and business travellers serving as a reminder that showing courtesy towards cabin crew can often make a journey feel more positive, though it should not be treated as a dependable flight-planning strategy.
