As if you needed to be reminded, the 89th Annual Academy Awards® took place on Sunday. For the third year running, Piper-Heidsieck was served as the sole Champagne of the event. More than 1,400 bottles and 12,000 glasses of Piper-Heidsieck were enjoyed at the Annual Academy Awards®, and a bottle was popped every 8 seconds at the Governors Ball. Emma Stone (pictured) enjoys a glass of the Piper-Heidsieck Rare 1998 that was served exclusively in the engraving room to celebrate the winners as they waited for their golden statuettes to be inscribed.

Also on offer was the Piper-Heidsieck limited edition Oscars® magnum (pictured) that was poured exclusively at the ceremony and Governors Ball, the Academy’s official Oscars® after-party. Piper-Heidsieck Rare 2002 was also enjoyed at the ceremony, Governors Ball and the Academy’s official Oscars® after-party.

Hugues Lechanoine and Sir Russell Coutts

Five times winner of the America’s Cup and now CEO of The America’s Cup Event Authority (ACEA), Sir Russell Coutts, joined Baron Philippe de Rothschild’s Managing Director, Hugues Lechanoine, at Trinity House in London on Tuesday to unveil the first release of the Mouton Cadet 35th America’s Cup Special Cuvée wines.
Mouton Cadet is the official wine of the 35th America’s Cup and the packaging for the red, white and rosé trio has been designed in collaboration with Sir Russell Coutts whose signature appears on every bottle.

Altos Tequila launched the Tahona Society Cocktail competition 2017 this week. The Tahona Society national heats are set to begin this month ahead of the global finale in Mexico in September.

Founded in 2010 by leading bartenders Dré Masso and the late Henry Besant, the Tahona Society welcomes mixologists to ‘Join the Mexican Evolution’ in its 2017 edition. Competition entrants must craft a cocktail that represents sustainable values, celebrates the flavour of agave and can be paired with a variety of authentic Mexican street food.

The community of Somersham, Suffolk, have saved their local pub, the Duke of Marlborough . After just over two years of campaigning, the keys have been handed over.

Local doctor Sarah Caston, saddened by the prospect of losing the pub for future generations, set up the Save the Duke campaign. “The Duke had been offering hospitality for well over 500 years. We just wanted that to continue. It’s a beautiful, rural, historic inn, treasured by the community – and with potential to offer something special to people from further afield. It was clearly worth fighting for!”

A committee of volunteers, headed initially by Sarah and later by James Batchelor-Wylam, helped to raise the money needed to purchase the pub. They are now looking for an operating team to run the Duke of Marlborough.

Pfeiffer Wines winery in Rutherglen, Australia, has some rather special residents. The winery turtles are over 70 years old and there are at least 50 in residence under Pfeiffer’s historic timber bridge in Sunday Creek.

Not everyone is taking it easy. Harvest begins at Pfeiffer Wines, a small family-run winery, which produces white and red wines, plus fortified wines, including the famous Rutherglen Muscat and Rutherglen Durif. Those going to ProWein later this month can meet Chris Pfeiffer (pictured) on the Wine Australia stand (Hall 9 Stand G06) in the New World Hall.

Estates & Wines Masterclass and Roadshow took place on Monday. Cheval des Andes, Terrazas de los Andes, Bodega Numanthia, Cloudy Bay (pictured), Cape Mentelle, Newton Vineyard and Ao Yun together make up Estates & Wines, the wine division of Moët Hennessy and part of the LVMH group.

English wine estate Ridgeview was named Viticulture Grower of the Year in Horticulture Week’s Annual Grower of the Year Awards. Hosted at the Grand Connaught Rooms in London, the awards gathered over 500 professionals to celebrate the very best of UK production horticulture. There are now over 500 vineyards in the UK producing over 5 million bottles per year, with land under vine in England set to increase by 18% in 2017.

Ridgeview’s Viticulture Grower of the Year award was accepted by vineyard manager Matt Strugnell, who has managed Ridgeview’s home estate for more than 15 years.

Matthew Clark hosted its biggest ever Trade Tasting on Tuesday at Tobacco Dock – The Drinks Emporium. There was a record turnout of trade and customers with the chance to try wines but also beer, spirits and cocktails for the first time. Next stop… Edinburgh for the first in the series of the distributor’s Uncovered events.

Irish Distillers launched a brand new range of prestige whiskeys called METHOD AND MADNESS at the Projects Art Theatre, Dublin. Guests were treated to DJ sets, canapés and cocktails. The METHOD AND MADNESS range launches with four new Irish whiskeys, each with its own twist; a single grain Irish whiskey finished in virgin Spanish oak; a single pot still Irish whiskey finished in French chestnut; a single malt Irish whiskey enhanced with French limousin oak; and a 31-year-old single cask, single grain limited edition bottled at cask strength.
