BBR to bring back ‘No. 3’ magazine

Fine wine merchant Berry Bros & Rudd is bringing back its consumer magazine ‘No. 3’ after a 22-year hiatus.

Named after the merchant’s address in St James’s, the magazine was founded by Anthony Berry in 1954 to introduce buyers to both the company and the world of wine.

Berry said the magazine was a chance to make BBR: “Better known to our customers, taking them beyond the somewhat sombre view of our shop… and showing them that the atmosphere inside Number Three is very far from forbidding.”

Having published 78 editions featuring more than 400 articles and 1,500 wine recommendations, the title slipped into abeyance in 1994 when the company launched its first website.

With the rise of the web a 24-page booklet suddenly seemed somewhat parochial. Yet, as the magazine’s new editor, Emily Miles, said: “It was the idea of giving pause for thought in today’s hurried, opinionated world as well as providing fuel for conversation, which led us to – once again – publish a periodical dedicated to wine, spirits and the art of good living.”

Previously described as a bit of a “parish magazine”, the new No. 3 will be printed in an A3 newspaper format and will include contributions from Berry’s wine buying team as well as Sunday Times contributor Will Lyons.

The first issue of the new magazine for example includes an overview on the past, present and future of Burgundy from Jasper Morris MW, a look at the future of wine from Lyons and a feature on how to start a cellar.

No. 3 will be published twice a year and the new issue is currently available at BBR’s shops in London and Basingstoke.
