Sotheby’s first London fine wine sale of the winter season includes rare Sauternes and Champagne among the more usual cornucopia of claret and Burgundy.

Taking place on 14 September, the sale features wines from two “superb” collections including several large format bottles.

The Right Bank of Bordeaux is well represented by 1989 Petrus and Lafleur and 1990 and 2000 Cheval Blanc while from the Left comes 1945 Lafite, a Jeroboam of 1986 Latour and 1989 Haut-Brion in double magnums.

As for Sauternes there two bottles of 1928 Doisy Daëne, a bottle of 1948 d’Yquem, a full case of 1961 d’Arche Crème de Tête, half bottles of 2001 Yquem as well as the 1989 in double magnums.

From Burgundy comes the likes of 1942 La Tâche, 1966 Echézeaux (both Domaine de la Romanée-Conti), 1989 Bonnes Mares and 1990 Musigny Cuvée Vieilles Vignes from de Vogüé. White Burgundies meanwhile are represented by Leflaive and Ramonet from 1985 to 2011.

There are vintages of Hermitage La Chapelle spanning 1962 to 2012 including the 1990, as well as German and Alsatian gems from the 70s, 80s and 90s from Zind-Humbrecht and Schloss Johannisberg among others.

Nor is Italy neglected, with Salmanazars of Vigna L’Apparita di Ama, 2001 Barolo Riserva Monfortino from Giacomo Conterno and 1986 Barbaresco Costa Russi from Gaja.

Elsewhere, look out for Dominus (imperials of the 2006 and 2008) and Shafer from the US, Krug 1990 and 1990 Comtes de Champagne, 1994 Quinta do Noval Nacional and 1980 Vega Sicilia ‘Unico’.
