The week in pictures: Hong Kong

Tasting some of Burgundy’s finest, a vintage Port decanting competition and meeting Hawksmoor’s Josh Reynolds AKA the 2015 Chivas Global Master. It’s been a busy week for the db HK team.

Ivy Ng, publisher of the drinks business HK and Caroline Que from Madison Wines present Toby Mountjoy, director of Autism Partnership Foundation with a cheque for HK$155,000 after db HK’s inaugural blind-tasting competition, HITT.

The Fine Wine Experience hosted a dinner with a selection of Burgundy with Anthony Hanson MW and Rosi Hanson. Entitled, “The Impact of Soil & Site,” Anthony guided guests through contrasting wines of Meursault, Puligny-Montrachet, Chambolle-Musigny and Vosne-Romanée and led a fascinating discussion on how much of a wine’s makeup is due to soil or the producer.

Members of the Hong Kong drinks trade gathered in the Conrad to witness the second Port decanting competition hosted by the Vintage Port Academy. The winners were home team Andrew Lee and Lucas Law from the Conrad (pictured in the middle) as judged by Euan McKay from Symington Family Estates and Nicolas Heath from Taylor’s.

After the decanting excitement, guests had a walkaround single Quinta Vintage Port tasting where the 1965 Graham’s Malvedos was an all-round crowd-pleasing favourite.

Next up was the launch of the Cristal 2007 gala dinner hosted by Links Concept with special guest Executive VP Michel Janneau introducing the “misunderstood and understated” vintage.

It was off to Repulse Bay for the db Hk team for the preview of Cabana – a beach club with stunning views over the South China Sea and the newest addition to the Le Comptoir Group. A fellow journalist voted it “the best place to bring your Mumm” as the free-flowing GH Mumm Champagne got everyone in the mood for late Sunday afternoon drinking.

Legendary mixologist from London’s Hawksmoor, Josh Reynolds was in town to create a new cocktail using Chivas Regal 12. Named, “#IKNOWTHATFACE,” Josh attributed this to an earlier mentor, Gareth but also from Hong Kong’s “frenetic lifestyle.” #IKNOWTHATFACE is made up of Chivas Regal 12, cream soda syrup and Dubonnet Rouge and is available from Aberdeen Street Social and Hawksmoor.
