The minimum drinking age of 21 in the US is national law

age-21_6In actual fact, each state can set the minimum drinking age to any number of their choosing. Unfortunately, the federal government passed the National Minimum Drinking Age Act in 1984, which strong-arms states to keep the drinking age at 21.

The law does not state the drinking age should be 21. It instead says that any state that does not make the drinking age 21 will lose 10% of their federal highway funding (due to the supposed higher chance of drink-driving).
