Clos des Goisses 2000 released

Champagne Philipponnat is to release the 2000 vintage of their prestige cuvée Clos des Goisses next week.

Produced from a single Grand Cru vineyard with a south-facing slope in the Gruguet Hills, only 20,000 bottles were produced, out of a potential 55,000, as the selection process was particularly rigorous.

The blend for 2000 is 65% Pinot Noir and 35% Chardonnay and the wine underwent no malolactic fermentation to help maintain its structure.

The 2000 vintage was a warm year for Champagne so balancing the wines intensity and ripeness with acidity and freshness was essential.

The house used oak for the first time during the initial fermentation for 50% of the wine although no new oak was used.

Having lain in the house’s cellars for nearly 10 years, Philipponnat has announced that the 2000 Clos des Goisses has the potential to age for a further 30 years.

Charles Philipponnat commented: “We have always believed in long ageing before release and prefer to keep our Clos de Goisses cuvée for eight to 10 years to allow the wine to develop complexity without losing any freshness.”

Clos des Goisses and Champagne Philipponnat is distributed in the UK via Caves de Pyrène. RRP for the Clos des Goisses 2000 will be £125.
