Fire at Jamaican distillery destroys 65,000 litres of rum

Jamaica’s Long Pond Distillery has lost more than 60,000 litres of rum in a fire which tore through the producer’s cane fields.

The fire started in cane fields near the Long Pond distillery, midday on Monday 16 July, and spread to parts of the fermentation room and the fresh rum stocks, destroying 65,000 llitres of Long Pond’s reserves.

The distillery itself and the stills were unaffected, and no staff members were injured in the fire.

Maison Ferrand acquired West Indies Rum, a Barbados distillery that became co-owner of National Rums of Jamaica, which owns Long Pond Distillery, back in 2017.

“In the middle of this difficulty, I know I can count on my team as well as our owners, the Jamaican Government, Maison Ferrand and Demerara Distillers Ltd,” Winston Harrison, CEO of National Rums of Jamaica, said.

We are all committed for Long Pond to distill again this one of a kind rum as soon as possible.”

The distillery said that firefighters were called to the blaze at 13:30pm on Monday. An emailed statement said they are now “working to bring it under control.”
