Global shortlist revealed

The Old Vine Conference has announced the shortlist for its first Old Vine Photography Competition, with 21 images selected from 272 entries submitted by amateur and professional photographers worldwide.

The shortlisted photographs were unveiled today (8 June) at the Heritage Showcase tasting at St John’s, Waterloo Road in London, where they are being exhibited in a pop-up gallery for trade and press visitors.

Online voting also opened on 8 June and will remain open for one month via the Old Vine Conference website, with winners set to be announced on Old Vine Day on 15 July.

Launched in March, the competition invited photographers to capture the beauty, history and resilience of some of the world’s oldest vineyards while raising awareness of the importance of preserving heritage viticulture.

Entries were submitted across four categories: Landscape and Plants, People, Cultural Legacy, and Resilience and Adaptation.

The competition is sponsored by the Consorzio di Tutela del Conegliano Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore DOCG.

Randy Caparoso, head judge, wine writer and photographer, said: “Photography has the power to make people see, feel and care.

“I’m excited to celebrate the images that shine a light on historic vineyards and inspire an appreciation and understanding of the need for their preservation.”

The shortlist announcement forms part of the Old Vine Conference’s Heritage Showcase, its largest trade and press tasting to date.

The event features 170 wines produced from old vines, heritage cuttings and vines of ancient genetic lineage.

Three masterclasses are taking place throughout the day, led by specialists from the Old Vine Conference, Conegliano Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore DOCG and Wines of Alsace.

Organisers said all shortlisted photographers will have their work displayed at the exhibition with full accreditation. The images will also feature in an online gallery and across the conference’s digital channels.

The initiative arrives at a time when the long-term resilience of vineyards is attracting increasing attention across the industry. As previously reported by the drinks business, growers are increasingly examining soil health, drought tolerance and vineyard adaptation strategies as climate pressures intensify.
