All the medallists from The Global Pinot Noir Masters 2026
From underripe and overworked to beautifully balanced, our tasting reveals the quality gap in Pinot Noir, and who is getting it right, says Patrick Schmitt MW.

WHAT IS the perfect Pinot Noir? It’s a question I found myself asking after our blind tasting of wines made in a wide range of styles and from diverse regions.
I think most wine professionals hold an ideal expression of the grape in their heads. And it usually centres on both taste and texture. At its best, young Pinot Noir shows juicy red berry fruit alongside a gentle citrus lift – often reminiscent of blood orange.
It can carry additional layers, from subtle vanilla derived from oak to spice from whole-bunch fermentation, as well as floral notes such as rose.
Texture is just as important: it should sit between light- and full-bodied – more like a summer duvet than a heavy blanket – filling the mouth while remaining soft and drinkable. The tannins should be present but fine, providing structure without drying the palate.
What disappoints in Pinot at any price? Underripe or overripe flavours – from green and stemmy to baked and jammy, along with excessive barrel-related notes, such as chocolate-covered coconut, and anything bruised from premature oxidation or, conversely, sulphidic from reduction – which Pinot is prone to.
As for the finish, Pinot can be spoiled if it’s dominated by the palate burn from high alcohol or a drying sensation from grainy tannins.

Over the years of chairing the Pinot Noir Masters, we’ve seen most extremes. This year’s tasting suggested that balance is being struck more consistently. Cooler climates are delivering ripe yet fresh expressions, with fewer underweight, green wines.
As for hotter regions, vineyard management and other changes seem to be helping winemakers craft Pinots with flesh, ripeness and energy too. Grainy textures seem to be rare, suggesting more sensitive tannin extraction techniques in the cellar, while oak flavours are increasingly complementary or secondary, rather than leading. There were occasional notes of reduction (such as raw onion), likely linked to low nitrogen during fermentation and the formation of hydrogen sulphide.
In terms of origins, there were surprises in 2026. One of them was England, specifically Kent, with Balfour the source of some fine, fresh Pinot Noirs. Another was Canada, with a couple of samples from Okanagan gaining Golds at the high-end £70–£100 price band, where the judges are more demanding of the wines.
On the subject of price, it is notable that the majority of Golds were awarded over £30, although there were a couple of standout cheaper Pinot Noirs: one from De Bortoli in the Yarra Valley, and the other from Ventisquero in Chile’s Casablanca Valley. Chile is also able to yield outstanding Pinot at the more expensive end of the market, with Cono Sur’s Ocio the only Master in the £50–£70 flight, using fruit from San Antonio.
Other standouts were Cloudy Bay’s Central Otago expression, Te Wāhi, and our Grand Master for 2026, Platt Vineyard’s Estate Reserve from Sonoma. When it comes to US Pinot Noir, there is much excited commentary about the quality of wines being made in Oregon. But our experience, based on this competition, is that California – especially cool coastal parts of Sonoma County – is the most reliable source of greatness.
As for Burgundy, the benchmark region for Pinot Noir underperformed at sub-£50 price points. As for the Côte d’Or’s top Pinots, they did not feature – perhaps because they are too expensive and rarefied to take part in competitions. Would they have outperformed the top wines in this year’s tasting? It’s impossible to say – but, on this showing, even the greatest names would have faced serious competition.
