Champagne Laurent-Perrier unveils blend for latest Grand Siècle

Something of an outlier in a world where most high-end Champagnes are from a single harvest, Laurent-Perrier’s prestige cuvée is a multi-vintage expression – and we reveal the latest blend.

Unveiled earlier this year, the Champagne – called Iteration N°27 (because it is the 27th blend of Grand Siècle since its launch in 1959) – features a set of excellent and contrasting harvests, with 65% of the wines from 2015, 25% from 2013 and 10% from 2012.

The prestige cuvée always contains three years, chosen for their complementary qualities, while it is also Chardonnay dominant, using grapes from a selection of grands crus, and it spends a minimum of 10 years ageing on its lees.

The numbering of each cuvée is designed to draw attention to the fact that every release is different, even though the wine follows this set of strictures, while making it easier to collectors and sommeliers to identify older blends.

Indeed, one of the appealing aspects to Grand Siècle is potential to improve over time if cellared, even though it is released ready to drink.

The Iteration N°27 contains 60% Chardonnay and 40% Pinot Noir; has a dosage of 7g/l; was disgorged in January last year, and has been released in the UK with an RRP of £220.

The vintages used in Grand Siècle Iteration N°27

2015 (65 %), 2013 (25 %), 2012 (10 %)

  • 2015: The year was marked by extreme weather events. A mild, rainy winter gave way to a spring of contrasts, with a cold snap followed by intense heat, and a stormy summer. The cool, dry conditions in September allowed for ideal grape ripening. The Chardonnays are ripe, with yellow fruit aromas, while the Pinots Noirs are opulent and rich.
  • 2013: A harsh winter was followed by a cold spring, resulting in a late budburst. The summer brought intense heat and record sunshine. From September, the weather turned very autumnal, leading to slow ripening. Harvest stretched from late September to mid-October — a rare occurrence in the past 20 years. The Chardonnays offer natural freshness and remarkable balance. The Pinots Noirs are delicate and restrained.
  • 2012: Winter and spring frosts reduced the yield potential early on. Spring rains were offset by a beautiful summer, resulting in wines of great finesse. The Chardonnays are elegant and well-balanced, and the Pinots Noirs show red fruit aromas.

8 Grands Crus and two grapes

  • 60 % Chardonnay from: Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, Oger, Avize, Cramant.
  • 40 % Pinot Noir from: Tours-sur-Marne, Ambonnay, Bouzy, Verzy.
