Loch Lomond Group enters American whiskey category

Scotland’s Loch Lomond Group has expanded into American whiskey with the acquisition of the New York Distilling Company and its associated brands.

The Scottish spirits producer, which counts Loch Lomond Single Malt Scotch Whisky, single malts Glen Scotia and Littlemill, Glen’s Vodka, Ben Lomond Gin and Champagne Piaff among its brands, announced its purchase of the US-based business yesterday (21 May).

“This deal will further enhance and diversify Loch Lomond Group’s portfolio of premium brands which will now importantly include American whiskey in addition to the group’s other premium spirits,” the company said of its acquisition.

American whiskey accounted for 63% of US spirits exports in 2023, according to Discus, equivalent to US$1.4 billion, an increase of 9% compared with the year before.

The New York Distilling Company produces a range of American whiskey brands including Jaywalk Rye Whiskey, Mister Katz Rock & Rye, Dorothy Parker Gin and Perry Tot’s Navy strength gin.

Colin Matthews, founder and CEO of Loch Lomond Group, said the acquisition represents “another milestone in the continued growth” of the business. The purchase of the New York Distilling Company is aimed at “supercharging its growth both domestically in the US and around the world through the existing Loch Lomond Group distribution network”, he said. Loch Lomond Group products are sold in more than 125 countries worldwide.

New York Distilling Company founders Allen Katz and Tom Potter confirmed that the acquisition would “introduce NYDC’s brands to many of the key whiskey markets over the next period”.

The Scottish company is investing in its domestic business as well as overseas, having recently announced a new build distillery and visitor centre in Luss, Dumbartonshire, Scotland which will open in June 2025.
