Domaine Santa Duc extends holdings in Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Renowned Rhône producer Domaine Santa Duc has acquired 4.7ha of vineyards in Châteauneuf-du-Pape as part of a strategic expansion.

6th generation winemaker Benjamin Gras heads up the estate, working with his father, owner and winemaker Yves Gras

The strategic acquisition, which will bring the estate’s total surface area under vine to 10 hectares, includes parcels across the prestigious lieux-dits of Montredon (1.87ha of Grenache and Syrah, of which 0.7ha will be replanted with white grapes), L’Arnesque (0.71 ha of Grenache), and Farguerol Nord (2.12 ha of Grenache).

Domaine Santa Duc owner and winemaker Yves Gras said the acquisition marked an exciting new chapter for the domaine.

“The terroir of Châteauneuf-du-Pape is legendary, and we are thrilled to craft wines that honour this region’s legacy,” he said.

The new vineyards will be used to support brands across the portfolio, notably its Habemus Papam label, although it is also considering creating a single-vineyard cuvée from Farguerol Nord, it said.

The soils range from Miocene sands and safres to Villafranchian rolled pebbles, it said, which are capable of producing wines “of great depth and character”.

Domaine Santa Duc was founded in Gigondas in 1874 and has grown to around 30-hectares of land, including prime vineyard sites in Gigondas, in lieux-dits, Les Hautes Garrigues and Clos Derriere Vieille, as well as 6 hectares of parcels in Chateauneuf-du-Pape. The balance is spread across Vacqueyras and Cotes du Rhone, including Rhone Villages wine appellations of  Rasteau, Cairanne and Sablet.
