Which drinks searches topped the Google charts in 2024?

As Google releases its 2024 search data, db picks out the top-trending drinks searches of this year. Sleepy Girl Mocktail anyone…?

Search engine giant Google has revealed its top trending searches during 2024. These are searches that had a high spike in traffic over a sustained period this year when compared with 2023, and can serve as a useful barometer for measuring consumer preferences as we hurtle towards the end of the year.

While Google has released search data for everything from haircuts and ‘how tos’ to dance tutorials and parenting advice, the drinks business has picked out the top trending drinks related terms that sum up what we’ve all been sipping this year.

Sleepy Girl Mocktail

If you haven’t yet heard of a Sleepy Girl Mocktail, this is a homemade drink that went viral on TikTok, racking up countless millions of views. It ranked number nine in the top 10 trending ‘food and drink recipe’ searches on Google in the US this year, and number eight globally.

Incorporating tart cherry juice, magnesium powder and a neutral sparkler like soda water or sparkling water, it’s designed to help you drift off to sleep effortlessly and is being touted as the perfect pre-bedtime drink.

The logic goes something like this: tart cherry juice contains melatonin, a natural sleep hormone, which when combined with the melatonin already naturally in your body, helps you fall asleep faster. Cherries also have anti-inflammatory properties which can lower stress hormones and help you nod off.

Some research studies have found that magnesium relaxes the nervous system, and the fizzy water is there just to dilute the strong flavour and make it more palatable.

Scientists have pointed out that some magnesium supplements (magnesium citrate, for example) can have a laxative effect, which may have the opposite result to that intended.

Porn Star Martini

The Porn Star martini ranked as the top-trending cocktail search in the US during 2024.

A mixture of vodka, passion fruit, vanilla, lime juice and Passoã, the original Porn Star Martini is said to have been created by Ghanaian-British bar owner Douglas Ankrah in London in the early 2000s. In an interview with The Buyer, Ankrah said: “I called it the Porn Star Martini because I thought it was something that a porn star would drink. It’s pure indulgence, sexy, fun and evocative”.

Ankrah was co-owner of LAB cocktail bar in Soho, London, which was widely thought of as serving the best cocktails in the city before it closed for good in 2016. The cocktail was later pivotal to the success of Ankrah’s next bar venture, Townhouse, he claims.

“I would love young bartenders to be more ambitious – not just to create cocktails but take it to market,” Ankrah told Giffords Guide. “Otherwise someone else will do it for you and it will hurt you.”

Many establishments now serve the Porn Star Martini with a shot of Champagne or sparkling wine on the side. The bubbles are said to help release the flavour of the passionfruit in the cocktail.

The Porn Star Martini topped the list of trending cocktail searches in the United States this year (see below for full list).

UK fans

What’s more, ‘how to make a Porn Star Martini’ also featured in the top five trending ‘how to’ searches in the UK, proving the drink’s popularity still reigns in its country of origin.

Brits were more interested in finding out how to make a Porn Star Martini than how to watch the Olympics or see the Northern Lights.

However, the Porn Star Martini recipe was less popular than: how to vote in the UK; how to get Oasis tickets; how to watch Fury vs Usyk; and how to watch Tyson vs Paul.

Top trending cocktail searches in 2024:

  1. Porn Star martini
  2. Honey deuce
  3. Hugo spritz
  4. Gin fizz
  5. Dirty martini
  6. Lychee martini
  7. Carajillo
  8. Dark ‘N’ stormy
  9. Lemon drop martini
  10. Aperol spritz

Although vodka has widely been touted as falling behind other spirits categories, the fact that vodka-based cocktails (Porn Star martini, Dirty martini, Lychee martini, Lemon Drop martini and Honey deuce) occupy five of the top 10 trending cocktail searches in 2024 suggests that it may be making a comeback.

That vodka also dominates the growing RTD market, alongside Tequila, further underlines this.

In April, db reported that vodka sales are also growing in the fine dining sector, with room still to improve. The spirit currently makes up almost a third (29.2%) of all spirits sales in the channel in the US, according to research from CGA by NIQ.
