On the fifth day of Christmas

For the fifth day of Christmas, db’s Bordeaux correspondent Colin Hay suggest an exceptional, limited release of wine from Pessac-Léognan that comes in a special handmade bottle, made for sharing.

The wine: Chateau de Fieuzal’s wondrous blanc from the 2021 vintage, in a large and rather unique format, for sharing.

Format: As I was saying, ‘a large and rather unique format’! This is a special limited release of 50 handmade and individually numbered bottles of 2.25 litres each of Château de Fieuzal blanc from the exceptional 2021 vintage (exceptional, above all, for the whites of Pessac-Léognan).

Unique selling point: A rather special gift and one consciously intended for sharing. The release marks the 20th anniversary of the acquisition of de Fieuzal by the Quinn family (in 2001). The gloriously proportioned 2.25 litre bottle comes in its own presentation case (it would, wouldn’t it!). In short, this is both aesthetically indulgent and extremely rare.

Yours for: Honestly, I’m not sure and I didn’t dare ask. Your true love will need to be braver than I. If she can’t track down one of the 2.25 litre bottlings, then she might find it easier to source 6 bottles in their original wooden case (tissue-wrapped and all). We’re talking £255 in bond from Cru in London.

Tasting note:

Château De Fieuzal blanc 2021 (Pessac-Léognan; 60% Sauvignon Blanc; 40% Sémillon). Tasted , needless to say, from bottle rather than the 2.25 litre format! Gracious yet tense, agile and charged with fresh citrus acidity. Lime. Lime zest. Lime blossom above all, with the delicacy that suggests. Pure and very crisply fresh. Fluid. Lithe. The wood is seamlessly incorporated. A wine of great class, harmony and balance, this is dense and viscous yet racy, bright, crisp and dynamic. Very long, too, with a beautifully almost crumbly finish. Captivating. One of the stars of a great white vintage for the appellation (and, no doubt, even better in grand format!). 94+.

*while the fifth day of Christmas actually falls on 29th December, the db offices will be shut between Christmas and New Year, so publishing in advance should give you time to get organised and stock up!
