How to get Grenache noticed by the consumer
Despite being the seventh most planted grape variety across the world, Grenache is often goes unnoticed by consumers — even though they drink a lot of it. Now is your chance to make your wine stand out at the Global Grenache Masters competition.
Largely not seen on the label, in Europe, where the majority of Grenache is planted, it is buried in the AOP regulations. In Australia, where it is also planted and vineyard area is increasing, it is hidden with the GSM name, Grenache-Shiraz-Mataro appearing on wine labels.
So perhaps it is no surprise that consumers aren’t as knowledgeable about the variety as they are about other supermarket staples such as Sauvignon Blanc or Pinot Noir or Cabernet Sauvignon.
From its apparent birthplace in Spain, Garnacha Tinta is a staple in the three sub-regions of Rioja and, in southern France, Grenache Noir is the mainstay of most red wines. It has expanded to many regions globally and thrives in hot and dry climates.
Last year, our Global Grenache Masters investigated wines hailing from Australia, South Africa and California, to name just a few, taking in samples made from Grenache Noir (Garnacha Tinta), Grenache Blanc (Garnacha Blanca) and even some blends with Grenache Gris (Garnacha Roja).
As judge Patricia Stefanowicz MW states: “From inexpensive, crowd-pleasing ‘quaffers’ to serious, age-worthy ‘classics’, Grenache makes excellent wines in a variety of styles and price points”.
Make your wine stand out from the crowd this year at our Masters competition.
You can now enter your Grenache into the drinks business Global Masters competition. The competition will recognise and reward the finest Grenache on the world stage.
All Global Masters are judged blind by the finest palates in the world – a panel of Masters of Wine, Master Sommeliers and senior buyers only. The best competing wines are awarded medals from Bronze through to Gold, and ultimately “Master” for exceptional examples.
The calibre of the judges guarantees international recognition of all the medals awarded.
