Yesterday (22 February) saw editor-in-chief of db Patrick Schmitt MW attend the varsity blind tasting at Berry Bros & Rudd in London, supported and organised by Pol Roger Portfolio. Pictured above is The University of Cambridge’s winning team.

Disznókő

Senior staff writer Louis Thomas attended an extensive Furmint February tasting with Tokaji producer Disznókő.
Sampling everything from dry table wines to the syrup-like Eszencia alongside an international plethora of canapés, the estate’s general manager László Mészáros revealed how there is much more to finding pairings for Furmint than working with its racing acidity.

Château Tanunda

Vintage 2024 has started at Château Tanunda in the Barossa Valley.

Following tradition, the Barossa team were out ringing the bell and celebrating the 134th vintage with a glass of Premium Cuvee bubbles around the first grapes harvested for the 100 Year Old Vines Semillon.

Koshu of Japan

On Wednesday 21 February, Koshu of Japan returned to London for its 15th annual trade tasting, organised by Phipps Relations.

Ten producers from the Yamanashi Prefecture, including Grace Wine, Lumière Winery, Chateau Mercian and Suntory, flew over to meet media, sommeliers, buyers and educators for a day of tasting at 67 Pall Mall.

Isa Bal MS (Trivet) hosted a morning masterclass for trade, taking a deep dive into the breadth of styles that the Koshu grape can produce, including sparkling, still and orange, and its food pairing potential.

In the afternoon, Sarah Jane Evans MW led a focused tasting of both Koshu expressions and the red wines being made in the Yamanashi Prefecture.

Sheppy’s Cider

Sheppy’s Cider, one of Somerset’s oldest cider makers, has partnered with Buglife to support the charity’s work in rehabilitating the UK’s bug population.

From 12 February 2024, a portion of all sales from Sheppy’s 200 Cider purchased from selected Waitrose and Tesco stores as well as online through Ocado and the Sheppy’s webshop will be donated to the charity to aid its crucial conservation efforts of invertebrates and their habitats.
