Inter Rhône is delighted to welcome you to a series of masterclasses with Rhône Valley wine aficionado Matt Walls. Each masterclass will take an in-depth look at a specific appellation, showcasing its unique qualities and each region’s rising stars, established producers and benchmark wines.

Costières de Nîmes – 22nd April in Manchester

The only Rhône Valley appellation influenced by the sea.

Whites, reds and rosés with a marine freshness with Jérôme Castillon from the Château l’Ermite d’Auzan and co-president of Costières de Nîmes appellation.

With vines stretching as far as the Roman city from which they take their name, the Costières de Nîmes appellation vineyards provide a graceful transition from Provence to the Camargue, blending garrigue landscapes with views of the wetlands.

Despite being the Rhône Valley’s southernmost appellation, it is in fact the coolest due to the cooling influences of the Mediterranean sea, as well as the northern ‘Mistral’ winds. This leads to widely-varying temperatures between day and night, which in turn helps to retain the freshness of the fruit. Despite the vines dating back thousands of years, it is still very much one of Rhône’s undiscovered gems.

Côtes du Rhône and Côtes du Rhône Villages – 23rd September in Birmingham

A region of fantastic value Family wineries, heritage grapes, sustainable practices, affordable prices

Along the length of its winding waters and gentle banks, the Côtes du Rhône vineyards flourish across 171 communes with their variety of rich, varied terroirs, all bathed by the same bountiful sun. These may be broadly deemed as the most accessible wines in the Rhône Valley, thanks to their affordable price tags, but that doesn’t mean they are lacking in quality. Discover which producers are the ones to watch, the innovation in the appellation, and the hidden gems to try before anyone else.

A separate category within Côtes du Rhône, the Côtes du Rhône Villages appellation showcases the quality and character of wines produced in 22 specific villages. The stricter appellation rules for these villages give them more prominence and a lot of personality.

From the original communes given village status, to some of the newest additions to the lineup, discover the breadth of personality within these coveted villages.

Saint-Joseph – The Northern Rhône cru – 17th September in Glasgow

Extreme conditions, remarkable wines: reds and whites from granite hillsides.

On the right bank of the Rhône, the Saint-Joseph vineyard is planted on steep hillside terraces which date from many centuries ago.The appellation is known for its red wines, made predominantly from Syrah, which are powerful and elegant, and, on a smaller scale, for whites made from Roussanne and/or Marsanne.

Saint-Joseph is renowned for its great value high quality wines and has even bigger potential with many of the best slopes being replanted after neglect. It is a region buzzing with new producers – in part thanks to generational changes – and experimentation. Definitely one to watch.
