Morandé launches “extreme” Syrah

Morandé has added an experimental Syrah to its Black Series Range, which highlights Chile’s most extreme valleys.

Chile’s Morande Wine Group is adding a new premium Syrah from the Limarí Valley to its Black Series, which also includes a Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from Malleco.

According to Morandé, the Black Series Syrah (RRP £24) is “a testament to the immense potential of the Limarí Valley, which beautifully captures and expresses the essence of the Syrah grape to produce an outstanding wine distinguished by freshness, balance, and fine tannins.”

Ricardo Baettig, chief winemaker at Viña Morandé, explained that the new wine is “a result of our unwavering commitment to exploring and showcasing the potential for wines from Chile’s most extreme valleys.”

He added: “For more than 25 years we’ve been exploring Chile’s diverse terroirs and the Limarí Valley, one Chile’s driest, is proving to produce exceptional quality wines thanks to its unique combination of climate and soil.”

With a complex nose of black cherry and blackberry, alongside well-integrated wood notes, Morandé Black Series Syrah boasts a firm texture and an intense, fruit-balanced, and elegant palate.

Planted in 2012, the Black Series Syrah vineyard sits on highly calcareous soil in the coastal region of the Limarí Valley. The vineyard benefits from the valley’s low coastal fog, known as the ‘camanchaca’, which refreshes the vines in the mornings before lifting to let in sunlight.

The valley also benefits from moderate temperatures from the cool sea breezes and cloudy mornings, which together ensure a slow and extended ripening of the fruit to produce incredibly elegant and fresh wines.

The Black Series Syrah vineyard uses vertical espalier (cordon training), where the grapevines are trained along a horizontal wire – allowing the branches to spread out horizontally to control the growth of the vines and optimise grape production

Berkmann Wine Cellars will be looking after the wine’s distribution in the UK.
