Petition launched to save Anchor Brewing

A petition has been launched on change.org by a craft brewery to try and save San Francisco’s Anchor Brewing from liquidation.

The petition has been launched by Narragansett Beer, which was purchased by a group of investors from Pabst Brewing Company in 2005, and is now the 27th largest craft brewery in America, according to figures from the Brewers Association.

It comes as the history Anchor Brewery has been closed by Japanese brewing giant Sapporo, who bought the brewery for $US85m in 2017.

President of Narragansett, Mark Hellendrung, started the petition, which is called “Stand Together to Save Anchor Brewing Company!” in order to try and draw together the beer community and stand “shoulder to shoulder” to save Anchor, in a similar way to how itself – Narragansett was founded in 1890 – was saved in 2005.

Anchor held a “special place” in brewing history, it stated, and its “commitment to traditional brewing methods combined with their passion for pushing boundaries has made them an integral part of American beer culture.”

It said the petition was “personal” as it knew first-hand the challenges of small businesses in the craft beer industry, and its own brewery was on the brink of closure in the 1990s. The petition includes a number of facts about Anchor, including that its closure will result in more than 200 job loses, its part in San Francisco culture and wider craft beer culture.

The petition states: “18 years ago, our community rallied together and provided unwavering support to resurrect our beloved company. Today, we are calling upon all craft beer enthusiasts and supporters to do the same for a fellow pioneer in the industry, Anchor Brewing Company.

“Being a good neighbor is not merely about existing alongside one another; it is about standing shoulder to shoulder during times of adversity. We have an opportunity now to show our support and help save this iconic brewery.

“By signing this petition, we are urging all beer enthusiasts, local businesses, and supporters of the craft beer industry to come together and show our unwavering support for Anchor Brewing Company. Let us remind them that they are not alone in this challenging time.

“Together, we can make a difference. Together, we can help save Anchor Brewing Company from closure. Sign now to stand shoulder to shoulder with our fellow pioneers in the craft brewing industry!”
