Paul O’Grady’s Lily Savage beer and wine tasting clip goes viral
Following comedian Paul O’Grady’s death, fans are sharing an ‘hilarious’ clip of his drag alter ego Lily Savage at a beer and wine tasting.
The former Blind Date host, who died ‘peacefully’ yesterday, aged 67, according to his husband Andre Portasio, was known fondly and tributes from across the nation from the Royal Family through to the entertainment business have flooded social media since the news was announced.
Throwback clips of the late comedian and his drag alter ego Lily Savage drinking wine on live television are being shared widely, with one clip in particular – shared by Twitter user @_MxMike being heralded by fans as “the funniest 90 second drinks tasting you’ll ever watch” and “a peak 90s throwback moment”.
The video clip, which sees Savage “getting totally bladdered” with Richard Madeley and Judy Finnigan live on ITV1’s This Morning back in 1994, has gone viral on Twitter and Instagram, and predates an ethos of “responsible drinking”.
Savage, wearing a pink sequinned blouse, and leopard print skirt, first tried out various French beers, but announced: “It tastes like the stuff you put in the cat litter tray to get rid of the smell.”
After being presented with a another glass of beer, Savage who had drained her glass, stated it was “lovely” and “gorgeous” before finding out the price. “I’m not paying a fiver for that, sorry. Not while there’s Blue Nun in the shops,” before throwing her glass over the balcony and into the nearby dock.
The clip ends with Savage pouring herself more wine while swaying and proposing a toast before serenading viewers with a song.
Announcing his husband’s death this week Portasio said: “He will be greatly missed by his loved ones, friends, family, animals and all those who enjoyed his humour, wit and compassion. I know that he would want me to thank you for all the love you have shown him over the years.”
