The week in pictures

This week in the world of drinks: The Hidden Sea unveils the world’s largest plastic pyramid in the Egyptian desert, The Ten Locks team visits Mexico for a journey of a lifetime into Tequila culture and education, and the Crus Bourgeois du Médoc hosts its annual tasting in London.

Purpose-led Australian wine brand The Hidden Sea has teamed up with Zero Co to fund the launch of the 100yr Clean Up initiative, which was announced with the unveiling of the world’s largest plastic pyramid in the Egyptian desert.

Justin Moran, founder of The Hidden Sea, which is on track to take one billion plastic bottles from the ocean through sales of its wines, said: “Despite its epic size, the pyramid shows just a fraction of what is an incredible crisis. Powered by wine drinkers, The Hidden Sea has removed 18 million plastic bottles from the ocean so far; this demonstrates that consumers simply need a clear way to be part of the solution. They want to get behind companies that put their money where their mouth is. It’s time to draw a line in the sand and change and come together as business leaders to help manage the crisis. Those who, like us, have the ability, have the responsibility.”

The Ten Locks team touched down in Mexico last week, for a journey of a lifetime into Tequila culture and education by Mexico’s best kept secret, El Tequileño.

Joined by leaders from the UK on-trade, including key industry influencers such as Ramona and Daisy Green from the UK’s prominent cocktail cities of London Manchester, Leeds and Liverpool, the purpose-led drinks firm was taken on the terrific tequila trip by El Tequileño’s Steffin Oghene, for a week of agave education, brand immersion and tequila tasting.

El Tequileño was launched to the UK on-trade in 2020 by Ten Locks, at a time when consumer interest in agave spirits was rising. Two years on, curiosity for Tequila and Mezcal is still growing amongst Brits who have developed a taste for well-made, heritage-honed liquids at the premium end of the market.

The Crus Bourgeois du Médoc hosted their annual tasting in London this week showcasing wines from the 2018, 2019 & 2020 vintages. Marguerite de Luze, owner of Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel Château Paveil de Luze was over in London to present the Cru Bourgeois wines and talk about the 2020 classification and plans for the next classification in 2025.

And The Tidal Rum has announced the launch of Golden Tide, the world’s first rum to be distilled at sea.

The new rum is being distilled exclusively for P&O Cruises on board its newest ship Arvia whilst she sails in the Caribbean, with the recipe being created on the mainland.

A 50-litre still will be used on board the ship to distill the Golden Tide rum as the ship sails.
