Wines from Spain celebrates ‘buzzing’ annual tasting

Wines from Spain’s flagship London trade and press tasting held on 28 June has been hailed as a success, attracting more than 450 visitors.

Given that Spain is the world’s second biggest wine producing country, it is only logical that the nation boasts of a great range of varieties and styles. The 47 exhibitors presented approximately 890 wines between them, with everything from carton Sangria to premium Rioja being showcased to the attendees.

As the first such event since before the Coronavirus pandemic, it provided an opportunity for those producers seeking distribution to network, as well as a chance to reconnect.

As a commitment to sustainability, no catalogues were printed for the event. Instead, a ‘build your own’ digital catalogue, accessible by scanning a QR code with a smart phone, was utilised so that attendees could take notes while also reducing paper waste.

The in-person tasting was also complemented by a satellite tasting in Scotland held earlier in the month. Shipping samples to the homes and offices of those interested expanded the tasting to become UK-wide. In total, around 860 members of the trade and press engaged in these online tasting activities.

Fernando Muñoz, UK director for Foods and Wines from Spain, said: “We are so happy to have been able to welcome back our exhibitors and visitors this year. After the disruption experienced since 2019, it was great to be back together. The excitement of the trade for Spanish wines was palpable.”

He continued: “Time didn’t stand still for our wineries and so much innovation has taken place. The 2022 Annual Tasting was the perfect showcase for the incredible variety, quality and versatility of modern Spanish winemaking.”
