The week in pictures: Hong Kong

The week in Hong Kong F&B scene: new releases from Krug and Chandon, “Jackson’s Five” wine-pairing dinner and latest restaurant openings in town.

The Krug Behind the Scenes global tasting event was held at MONO in Hong Kong to celebrate the launch of Krug Grande Cuvee 170ème Edition. Hosted by Olivier Krug, Director of the House of and sixth generation of the Krug family, Julie Cavil, the House’s Cellar Master, and Manuel Reman, president of the House, it is the first time for the House to hold a vertical tasting of different editions throughout the decade to showcase how the Cuvees evolved over time.

Krug Grande Cuvee 170ème is a blend of 195 wines from 12 different years, spanning from 2014 to 1998, with the composition of 51% Pinot Noir, 38% Chardonnay and 11% Meunier. 45% of the final blend is made of the house reserve wines.

The event also offered a sneak peek at the new Krug Rosé 26ème Édition, which is a blend of 28 wines from 7 different years, the youngest from 2014 and the oldest from 2005. Its final composition is 44% Pinot Noir, 30% Chardonnay and 26% Meunier.

The Peninsula Hong Kong is going to host the “Jackson’s Five” Special Event with Spring Moon and Jackson Family Wines. The one night only wine dinner is taking place on 16 June and will be co-hosted with Pierre Marie Pattieu, Brand Ambassador in Asia for the Jackson Family.

Pattieu will guide diners through some of the choicest varietals from the California winery, as well as its affiliated Stonestreet Estate Vineyards, altogether with the exclusive Hong Kong debut of 2017 Stonestreet Cabernet Sauvignon Alexander Valley.

To accompany the wines, Chef Lam Yuk Ming from Spring Moon has designed a six-course menu of fine Cantonese cuisine. Dishes include pan-fried Wagyu beef rolls with green pepper, onions, and black garlic to pair with Stonestreet’s Cabernet Sauvignon Alexander Valley 2017; and braised winter melon stuffed with fish maw, Iberico ham, quinoa, American spinach and beetroot sauce, which perfectly complements the Mount Brave Merlot Mount Veeder 2016.

Priced at HK$ 2,588 per person, contact the restaurant for advance reservation.

Sparkling wine producer Chandon has released a new ready-to-serve cocktail Garden Spritz in Hong Kong. Just in the time of summer, the sparkling wine is mixed with the house Brut Rosé with locally crafted orange bitters from the Yarra Valley. Designed to be served over ice with a slice of orange and a sprig of rosemary, Chandon Garden Spritz (RRP: HK$155) offers drinkers the perfect sip of summer.

Maka Hiki Bar & Grill has freshened up the menu with a selection of tropical eats and pours overflowing with island vibes to get everyone into the summertime spirit.

The destination also offers larger cocktails for groups to enjoy together, such as Dive into the Forgotten Shell, topped up with a whole bottle of Pommery Brut Royal Champagne, is a concoction for big groups of 8-12 persons, and the rum-based Maka Hiki All The Way, made sweeter with fresh watermelon and orange, is meant for up to 8 persons. All served up in quirky, authentic Tiki style.

Starting from 1 June, the restaurant will partner with wine importer Links Concept to launch the “Wine Not Wednesday deal”, where exclusive wines will be selected to be paired with complementary oysters. The promotion will run every first Wednesday of the month.

Located in the heart of Central, Agora is the latest Spanish fine dining addition to the city. Opened in collaboration with JIA Group, the restaurant is helmed by Chef Antonio Oviedo, who achieved great success with his first venture 22 Ships, the local’s favourite tapas bar in Wan Chai.

The new contemporary Spanish fine-dining concept continues to showcase Chef Antonio’s boundary-pushing cuisine whilst staying true to his Spanish roots through seasonal tasting menus. The restaurant is now serving two seasonal chef’s degustation menus priced at HK$1,288 and HK$1,688 for 10 and 11 courses respectively. An optional 5-glasses of Spanish wine pairing can be added to either menu at an additional HK$850 per person.
