Reese Witherspoon releases new rosé

Reese Witherspoon, star of such films as American Psycho and Sing 2, has teamed up with Sonoma-based SIMI Winery on a new rosé to complement her book club.

The Editor’s Edition Rosé Wine is made with a blend of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay cultivated in Sonoma County, and is described as having aromas of “white peach, citrus and strawberry flavours rounded out with a kiss of watermelon.” It retails at Target for US$18.99, and is intended to be enjoyed whilst reading one of Witherspoon’s recommended books of the week.

Reese’s Book Club was founded, in Witherspoon’s words, “to elevate women’s stories and to connect with readers and friends”. The partnership with SIMI Winery came about in part because of one of the company’s founding figures, Isabelle Simi, and her resilience through prohibition in the 1920s. Both the current Senior Winemaker and Winemaker at SIMI are women.

The rosé isn’t the first wine released in The Editor’s Collection – a 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon and 2019 Chardonnay are also available.

Celebrity-endorsed wine and celebrity book clubs have become huge phenomenons, but this is the most prominent case of the two being combined. The closest example might be Sarah Jessica Parker, who is honorary chair of the American Library Association’s Book Club Central and launched her Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, Invivo X.

Not only does Reese’s Book Club have wines to match, there are also gift boxes available including books, socks, coffee and skincare products. The @reesesbookclub Instagram account currently has 2.2 million followers. By contrast, @oprahsbookclub has 645k.

Given the potential market these book clubs present, and the current craze for celebrity wine brands, it seems unlikely that Witherspoon will be the last celebrity to capitalise on these trends by combining them.
