Five fantastic Astis from the Global Sparkling Wine Masters 2021

Among the many bottles of fine fizz in our 2021 Global Sparkling Masters were a handful of fantastic Moscatos from Italy, which we’ve reviewed below.

GIULIO COCCHI, ASTI DOCG, NV – GOLD

A lovely example of sweet fizz, with layers of flavour, from raisins to fresh orange and grapes, white flowers and a touch of tangy citrus. Despite being sweet, rich and powerful in character, it’s also balanced, with a zesty finish.

  • Residual sugar level: 80 g/l
  • ABV: 7%
  • Approx retail price: £17

LA MARANZANA, MOSCATO D’ASTI DOCG MUSCATÉ BIANC, 2020 – GOLD

An open, aromatic wine with notes of fresh grapes, followed by a palate with plenty of sweet raisined fruit, and a clean zesty finish.

  • Residual sugar level: 155 g/l
  • ABV: 5%
  • Approx retail price: £5

TOSTI1820, ASTI DOCG, NV – GOLD

Crushed grapes and orange blossom aromatics lead to raisined flavours in this persistent gently sparkling sweet wine with a touch of refreshing citrus zest.

  • Residual sugar level: 86 g/l
  • ABV: 7%
  • Approx retail price: £18

MATTEO SORIA, MOSCATO D’ASTI DOCG SORIA, 2020 – GOLD

A delicious grape-and-floral-smelling lightly sparkling wine with lots of sweet ripe Muscat fruit, followed by a fresh, lingering orange-flavoured finish.

  • Residual sugar level: 140 g/l
  • ABV: 5%
  • Approx retail price: £11

CONTRATTO, ASTI DOCG DE MIRANDA, 2013 – MASTER

A fascinating and complex sparkling wine, with intense flavours of peach and ripe apple, orange and pineapple, along with a touch of mature fruit, with dried apricot and raisin, followed by a note of beeswax. The texture is mouth-filling and richly sweet, while the finish is bright, with a fine mousse, and some chalky phenolic grip to dry the palate. A perfect accompaniment for fruit-based puddings.

  • Residual sugar level: 111 g/l
  • ABV: 7%
  • Approx retail price: £35
