Bacardi rum cuts greenhouse gas emissions by 50%

Bacardi has revealed that, from next year, it will have cut greenhouse gas emissions at its Puerto Rico distillery by 50%.

Bacardi rum’s GHG emissions will be halved when a Combined Heat & Power (CHP) system goes live next year at its distillery. The new CHP system is set to replace heavy fuel oil with propane gas. The 50% reduction in Bacardi rum’s GHG emissions represents a 14% cut in the total emissions globally for the company, a step towards the 50% cut the company has set out to achieve globally by 2025.

Speaking to the drinks business, Bacardi rum senior vice president Ned Duggan said: “This year we’re celebrating our 160th anniversary, a milestone we’ve achieved by continuously investing in the future of our brands, our people and our communities. This incredible step to cut Bacardi rum greenhouse gases by 50% is a perfect example of how we’re doing exactly that.”

As part of its Corporate Responsibility programme ‘Good Spirited’ and, in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, Bacardi has set a number of goals which it is committed to achieving within the next three years.

The ultimate goal for 2030 is for the company to make a 50% cut in greenhouse gas emissions at Bacardi production sites; a 25% cut in water consumption at Bacardi production sites; make sure that 100% key raw materials and packaging is sourced sustainably; make sure that 100% of product packaging is recyclable; use 40% recycled content in product packaging materials and be working at contributing zero waste to landfill at all Bacardi production sites.

Rodolfo Nervi, vice president of global safety, quality and sustainability for Bacardi added: “While propane gas is the most responsible energy source in Puerto Rico right now, we are continuing to explore ways in which we can reduce our use of carbon-based fuels even further and take more positive steps towards our ultimate goal of net zero.”
