New York man bottles ‘Emotional Support Beer’ you can actually buy now

Brooklyn resident Floyd Hayes was riding the bus in New York City when he had the idea for the Emotional Support Beer, after an announcement said it was illegal to use alcohol on board without written permission. Thus, the Emotional Support Beer was born.

In an email to Time Out New York, Hayes explained the situation:

“It said: ‘no loud cell phone calls, keep your headphone on low, don’t distract the driver and the use of alcohol is against federal law unless you have a prior written permission’”.

“The ‘written permission’ tickled me. I liked the idea of enjoying a beer and then unfurling a scroll of permission if challenged by the law.”

And thus, Hayes registered a pint of beer as an emotional support animal with the USA Service Dog Registration.

But that was then and this is now, and – remarkably – Hayes’ Emotional Support Beer is an actual product that you can buy for yourself.

Working in collaboration with brewery Woodstock Brewing, Hayes has made his beer a reality. The tipple costs $20 for a pack-of-four, with a portion of the proceeds being donated to Operation at Ease, an organisation that “takes dogs from shelters, pairs them with deserving veterans and first responders and provides a free guided training program for post traumatic stress and light mobility service dogs”, per its website.

The Citra hop IPA boasts citrus flavours with notes of mango and honey.

This isn’t the only specially-themed beer released lately, either. You can read our report on the tipple created especially for parents who homeschooled their kids during lockdown here.
