Harvest begins in Roussillon

Domaine Lafage has begun its earliest-ever harvest following an exceptionally early growing season in Roussillon.

Among the first estates in the region to start harvesting each year, Domaine Lafage started picking today (Thursday 23 July).

The unusually early start to the 2026 harvest has been driven by a combination of factors. Budburst occurred around 15 days earlier than normal, accelerating the growing season, while generous rainfall early in the year replenished water reserves. This was followed by an exceptional weather pattern, with consistently high temperatures throughout spring and summer and extreme heat recorded from May onwards.

The first grapes to be picked are Muscat Petits Grains from vineyards along the Mediterranean coast. Harvested at optimal ripeness, they will be used to produce the Lafage family’s lightly sparkling white wine, Lafabuleuse, which is once again expected to have a moderate alcohol level of around 9% ABV.

A pioneer of regenerative viticulture, Domaine Lafage has had its entire vineyard estate certified by A Greener World (AGW) since the beginning of 2026. Over several years, the Lafage family has developed a range of practices aimed at improving vineyard resilience to climate change while enhancing biodiversity across its diverse terroirs. These include innovative water management strategies, soil regeneration through compost and biochar applications, and agroforestry initiatives, all designed to create healthier, more resilient vineyard ecosystems.

Following several vintages affected by severe drought, the 2026 season has brought renewed optimism to Roussillon. Winter and spring rainfall has helped restore balance to the vineyards, creating favourable conditions for a healthy, high-quality harvest with strong potential.
