TFWA president and board say industry has ‘bright future’

The board of the Tax Free World Association (TFWA) and its new president Jaya Singh have given a positive assessment of the future of the duty free and travel retail sector, while acknowledging the challenges ahead.

At a press conference lats week, Singh and the board announced the future vision of the TFWA and its predictions for the year ahead.

These included details of the upcoming TFWA Asia Pacific Hainan Special Edition event, which is scheduled to take place in Sanya from 10 to 13 May 2021. The current plan is for the main conference to combine both live-streaming, virtual meetings and a physical on-site event.

Instead of an exhibition, brands will host visitors in hotel and hospitality suites depending on the restrictions at the time.

Singh said that the crisis gives the industry the chance to create a new plan to “steer ourselves out of covid-19 and towards a bright future”.

He added: “We are living in unprecedented times. It is a time of silo breaking and of coming together, so that we as an industry can emerge much stronger from this crisis.

“There is a need to be financially prudent and to ensure that whatever we do is sustainable, but to also react quickly and scale up as the situation changes. I do truly believe the future is bright. People will continue to travel – that is a basic human desire that no-one can deny.”
