Revealed: Errazuriz Wine Photographer of the Year 2020 winners
A portrait of two German Pinot Noir winemakers from the famous wine estate Meyer Näkel has won this year’s Errazuriz Wine Photographer of the Year competition.
The image, called ‘Tipping Point’ and captured by German photographer David Weimann, impressed the judges with its “depth and atmosphere”, Caroline Kenyon, founder of the Pink Lady Food Photographer of the Year awards, said.
Weimann had first won the People section of the category, beating runners-up John Carey and Marina Spironetti.
Weimann’s photo was one of few entries to show two people sharing a moment together, something that has become altogether more poignant as countries across the world have enforced social distancing rules.
Only two months ago, the The Food Photographer of the Year organisers were sending invitations to the world’s culinary elite to a grand awards ceremony in central London, with Champagne Taittinger supplying the reception drinks. This year, the ceremony itself was held in a livestreamed event at 8pm on Tuesday 28 April, presented by musician and cheesemaker, Alex James, and watched by thousands across the world.
“The world is in the grip of Covid19 and normal life, whatever that may be, has stopped for all of us,” Kenyon said.
“But photos such as these remind us of the ways and cultural habits that mean so much to us and bind us together. We are all the same.”
The Places category was won by Thomas Hyland, USA, for his entry titled ‘A Langhe Winter’. Hyland beat UK-based photographer Jon Wyand, whose entry – ‘Late Afternoon in March, Vallée des Vaux Côte Chalonnaise’ – came second, while US photographer LM Archer’s ‘Patrimoine’ came third.
Produce was won by Patrick Desgraupes, France, with ‘Clos Saint Patrice Sample’. Wine photographer Matt Wilson, working in Chile, came 2nd in the category for his image, ‘Wine Thief Delicacy’, and in third place was Andrew Barrow, UK, for his work, titled ‘Wine and Cheese’.
“The standard was exceptional.” Phil Turnbull, CEO of APAL, parent company of Pink Lady, and headline sponsor of the Awards since 2011, said. “There were nearly 9000 entries from over 70 countries – this competition inspires across the world. It is a truly global coming together of talent.”
