Zachys to host ex-cellar Lafite sale in NYC

US fine wine auctioneer Zachys is going to offer a large selection of wines direct from the cellars of Château Lafite Rothschild in New York next spring – including famous vintages such as 1870, 1945 and 1959.

On 30 March next year the auction house will offer a selection of wines from the Lafite stable some dating back to the 19th century. As well as the grand vin and second label Carruades, wines from Rieussec, l’Evangile and Duhart-Milon will also be offered.

The Lafite on offer will feature every decade of the Rothschild’s ownership of the estate which began in 1868.

Eleven bottles from the 19th century are to be offered including one from 1870 which was a very famous vintage in Bordeaux.

Whoever buys the bottle of 1868 will also be invited to a dinner at the château.

Other vintages to be offered include 1945, 1947, 1949, 1959, 1961, 1982 and all the more recent great years as well – many of them are to be offered in large formats.

All of the wines in the sale have been inspected, re-capsuled where necessary, prooftagged and given custom boxes for the sale.

Saskia de Rothschild, chairwoman of Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) commented: “In 1868, Baron James, my great great great grandfather decided to purchase Château Lafite. Over 150 years, many people have come through the château’s doors and helped protect these wines to allow them to still be here today: my family ancestors but also the winemakers and the cellar masters who have all worked together to keep these wines alive.

“To celebrate this anniversary, my father and I thought it was a good idea to organise an auction to share the Lafite story once again with its dear collectors. Each vintage tells a different tale: written by the hands of the people that made them, through wars, frost attacks and recessions. Together, we chose vintages for which we wanted to find new homes, straight from the Lafite cellars to yours.”

Jeff Zacharia, president of Zachys, commented: “We are delighted to host such an historic auction in partnership with Saskia de Rothschild and the whole Lafite team. Lafite has always had a special place in my heart since I started in this business decades ago, and over the years Zachys has become the trusted vendor of Lafite, both at auction and retail. I see this as a culmination of a relationship built over decades. We can’t wait to share it with you.”
