Six unusual Christmas gifts for gin-lovers

THE BEAUTY OBSESSIVE

Does your gin-loving friend want to reverse the sands of time with minimum effort?

They’re in luck, as entrepreneurs Camilla Brown and Liz Beswick launched Collagin, a gin infused with powdered collagen, in 2017.

The brand now has three products in the range, including the limited edition Collagin Pink Rose which is steam distilled with rose petals, and the original Collagin 5cl minis. Collagen, which is added to the gin during the distilling process, does not affect the taste, smell, or appearance of the spirit.

Collagen, a protein that forms connective tissue throughout your body, has been shown to reduce wrinkles, keep joints strong and flexible and support strong bones. The new pink gin combines every milennial

Price: The original gin retails at £35, while the new pink gin costs £36.99

Where to buy is: The original gin is available in John Lewis nationwide, while the pink gin can be purchased directly from the company’s website.

THE TOURIST

Does your friend want to get into gin in a big way next year?

Boutique distillery Nelson’s runs a gin school at its Staffordshire still-house. During the session one of the label’s experts takes students through the gin manufacturing process and the history of Mother’s Ruin, handing out several G&T samples from the Nelson’s range throughout the day to keep them refreshed. Guests can create and keep their own gin using a range of botanicals on-site, or even bring their own.

Price: £115 per person or £145 for two people

Where to find it: From the distillery’s website.

THE FLAVOUR CHASER

Does your friend really, really, really like Christmas cake? Spirits company Warner Edwards is selling 700 bottles of fruit cake-flavoured gin in the run-up to the big day.

The spirit has been distilled with botanicals inspired by the festive season; dried orange, grapefruit peel, cinnamon and nutmeg as well as gin-soaked berries and cherries, with a splash of cherry-flavoured gin added at the last minute.

The resulting gin has flavour notes of “silky chocolate, festive spice and sweet cherry”, according to Warner Edwards, with almond and star anise on the nose.

Price: £45

Where to find it: You need to sign up to the Warner Edwards newsletter to secure a bottle.

THE ONE WHO HAS EVERYTHING

Is your friend’s Instagram feed full of £25 negronis and cocktails garnished with gold leaf in Mayfair’s member’s clubs? They might enjoy Morus, the flashest of gins, which went on-sale in Harvey Nichols last month.

Morus LXIV – which is distilled from the leaves of a single “ancient” Mulberry tree, is produced by London-based Jam Jar Gin, owned by husband-and-wife team Dan and Faye Thwaites, and sold in hand-made porcelain jars.

Price: a reasonable £4,000 per bottle

Where to find it: Exclusively available at Harvey Nichols

THE NERD

Big Star Wars fan? Firebox is selling two premium gins by the award-winning Bimber Distillery (a London Dry gin and a berry-infused sloe version), both of which come in an original, reusable 25cl stormtrooper glass bottle by Shepperton Studios.

Price: £49.99

Where to find it: available to order from Firebox’s website.

THE SENSORY ADVENTURER

Maverick Drinks brand That Boutique-y Gin Company has launched four new perfume-inspired expressions as part of a collaboration with Lizzie Ostrom of fragrance specialist Odette Toilette.

The Olfactor-y gin range consists of mind-bending flavours like Fresh Rain, which aims to replicate the earthy scent of petrichor; the chemical compound to thank for the smell of rain when it falls on dry soil.

Dead King Gin, meanwhile, combines the scent of freshly unwrapped Egyptian mummies and gin, featuring botanicals traditionally used in the embalming process including rosemary, honey, moss and myrrh. Yum.

Price: £42

Where to find it: The gins are currently only available at Harvey Nichols, but will be available through Maverick Drinks from 23 December.
