Aldi has launched a service dedicated to budget-friendly wedding wines

Discount grocer Aldi has launched an online wedding service which  enables customers to get their hands on Champagne which costs out at £2 per glass.

The store, which has steadily bolstered its wine offering over the past year, particularly in the lower ABV category, has launched a new web-page dedicated to offering sage advice on catering for a wedding, from how many bottles will be needed to food pairings.

The average wedding in the UK now costs couples £17,913, up 6% from £16,842 the previous year, according to new research published by Harpers Bazaar in March.

According to a survey carried out by wedding specialists Hitched, around 22% of British couples spend £1,000 on drinks alone.

The webpage claims that shoppers can save around £290 on Champagne alone by selecting Aldi Veuve Monsigny Champagne Brut NV for the pre-dinner drinks, compared to Veuve Clicquot which typically retails at around £40 per 70cl bottle.

When it comes to the toast, the website suggests nine bottles of Champagne would be enough for 50 guests; which equates to a total of £71.91– or £2 per glass when buying Aldi’s discount French fizz.

Alongside rival German grocer Lidl, Aldi is one of the UK’s fastest-growing supermarkets, with a total market share of 7.3% according to the latest sales figures from market analyst Kantar.

There are now more than 100 wines available to purchase online from the grocer’s website.

Julie Ashfield, managing director of buying at Aldi UK, said: “Now that wedding season has officially begun, we’re making it easier than ever for shoppers to choose the right wine when it comes to toasting thier special day.

“We’ve seen an increase in shoppers coming to Aldi to buy their wines for their wedding, as they know they can get great quality wines but without a hefty price tag. To help make the process even simpler we have created a dedicated page online, that will help guide them through our selection of quality wines, and offer them helpful tips and advice along the way.”
