English fizz boosts Waitrose’s Christmas
6th January, 2017 by Arabella Mileham
English wine sales soared at Waitrose over the Christmas period, with Champagne also seeing a healthy bump, the retailer has said.
The upmarket retailer saw sales of English sparkling rise 65% in the two weeks to 31 December, with Champagne also rising 13%. However marketing director Rupert Thomas noted a slight distortion in the comparisons between this year’s results and last year’s, due to Christmas and New Year falling on a Sunday.

Meanwhile retail analyst Shore Capital has predicted a “sound” Christmas for UK multiples, with progress in like-for-like sales, easing food deflation and “broadly positive volumes”.
Analyst Clive Black cited recovering consumer confidence following the Brexit vote in June, adding that: “We believe that British shoppers went into the holiday season in pretty sound mood with a wish to have a good time.”
Next week will see the bulk of the Christmas trading results across the multiples and specialist retailers, with online wine retailer Virgin Wines set to announce its results the following week.
