Farr Vintners donates £10k to The Benevolent auction

Fine wine merchant Farr Vintners has made a donation of £10,000 to drinks trade charity The Benevolent, kickstarting its upcoming silent auction through which it aims to raise £25,000 later this month.

Called ‘Thanks for Giving’, the online auction will run for one week from 24 November, Thanksgiving, and will offer punters lots of wine and rare spirits, cultural and corporate experiences and “wacky promises”.

Money raised will go toward The Benevolent, which supports members of the UK drinks trade facing financial, emotional or physical hardship.

Lots include full hospitality tickets to see Madame Butterfly at the Royal Opera House, VIP Hospitality tickets to Stamford Bridge for Chelsea Vs Hull City FC, and a three-day paid trip for two people to visit where Budweiser Budvar is brewed in Southern Bohemia.

Furthermore, many drinks trade personalities have offered their time, expertise and unique services as an ‘Auction of Promise’.

Among them, bidders will have the chance to hire Ian Harris, chief executive of the Wine & Spirit Education Trust as a butler for a private dinner party, or play a four-ball round of golf with wine writers Oz Clarke and Tim Atkin MW.

“I urge everyone to take a look at this auction site straight away and start bidding on Thanksgiving Day,” said David Cox, chief executive of The Benevolent.

“You may get an incredible bargain with some extremely rare and collectible lots. On a personal note, I am very proud to announce that my late twin brother, Michael Cox’s widow, Lynne has generously donated a very rare bottle of Cognac from Michael’s cellar. And what a terrific kick-start donation from Farr Vintners! We are truly thankful.”

The Benevolent is urging its supporters to raise awareness of the initiative to encourage bids, and make donations where possible. All the funds raised will go toward funding the work of The Benevolent to support colleagues in need of practical, emotional and financial help.

The inaugural online silent auction will start at 9am on 24 November and can be accessed via www.32auctions.com/thanksforgiving.
