As reported by Wine Spectator, Schÿler died on 31 October three days after this 85th birthday.

Founded by German merchants in 1739, Maison Schröder & Schÿler initially dealt in shipping spices, sugar cane, olive oil and wine from Bordeaux to the Baltic countries.

The same ships returned from the Baltic with oak to be turned into barrels, with the company making wine its sole focus by the end of the 18th century.

Schÿler joined the family company aged 22 and was put in charge of the 40-hectare Château Kirwan, bought by his father in 1925.

Sealing two French wine dynasties, Schÿler married Christine Krug of the Krug Champagne family with whom he had three children including Yann, the current CEO of Maison Schröder & Schÿler.

The company sold its majority stake of Château Kirwan in the early ’90s, which Jean-Henri had bought back by 1997.

Retiring in 1999, his daughters Nathalie and Sophie continue to work at Kirwan in the tourism and communications departments while Yann heads up the négociant business.

Jean-Henri served as president of the CIVB from 1974 to 1976.
