Angelus and Talbot hitting the high notes

July saw various vintages from Bordeaux estates Angelus and Talbot hit new all-time highs on the Liv-ex exchange.

The 2009 and 2010 vintages of Angelus traded at new highs of £2,900 and £2,802 per case respectively last month and the 2001 and 2004 set new records, while Talbot’s 2002, 2004, 2005, 2009 and 2010 vintages likewise rose to previously unscaled heights.

As reported by Liv-ex, the ’09 and ’10 Angelus have both come on strongly of late. The ’10 is now 12% up from its last trade price of £2,500 seen in April, while it has bounced back a full 40% since its lowest trade price of £1,989 in June 2014.

The ’10 has no doubted been boosted by its elevation to 99+ by Robert Parker last year. Prior to that with its initial rating of 94-96 it had lagged behind the ’09, which already had a 96-100 barrel rating followed up by a 99+ in-bottle score.

Liv-ex also noted however that the 100-point 2005 Angelus is still below its peak trade price of £3,700 p/cs.

Over on the Left Bank meanwhile, Saint Julien-based fourth growth, Talbot, has had a successful month, particularly its 2002.

Despite being rated 78 by Parker who called it “thin, meek, austere and shallow” as well as a “major disappointment”, it last traded for £472 and is now being offered at a market price of £540.

This is above the 2010 which has a market price of £511 and was rated 94 by Parker who called it “one of the best Talbots over recent years”.

Overall, the index tracking the last 10 physical vintages of Talbot has outperformed its peer index – the Left Bank 200 – by 13.5%.
